110th Anniversary Carnival

This year, Outram Secondary School turned 110, a significant milestone for the school founded by Sir James Outram in 1906!

With a 110 years of heritage and tradition behind us, Outram Secondary School found cause to celebrate the occasion in a big way. It is time to look back in gratitude for the years of great contributions and to look forward to keeping our flame burning bright in the educational landscape of Singapore.

The Outram family members of students, parents, partners, and staff, old and new, came together to enjoy the fruit of our labour, to share successes of our students, to renew a spirit of collegiality and to strengthen our relationship with the alumni, our stakeholders and the community. Through a slate of fund-raising activities, Outram aimed to improve school building facilities and learning spaces to provide a holistic education for our students. One key highlight of the celebration was the 110th Anniversary Carnival held on 28th May 2016.

Guest-of-Honor, Ms Regina Chong, member of the School Advisory Committee, opened the big party to great cheers at 9am on the Saturday morning in the school which was abuzz with excitement, anticipation and laughter. All our Secondary One to Secondary Three students set up fun and sporty games booths including the popular dunking machine and the hair-raising Haunted House, handicraft stations, yummy food and drinks stalls as well as a bazaar for the shopoholics.

The carnival was a wonderful opportunity for our students to exhibit their Value in Action projects as well as to hone their business skills. Despite long hours of hardwork and preparation, all our students exhibited the school values: S.P.I.R.I.T brilliantly in raising funds for the school and making the Carnival a resounding success.

110th Anniversary Speech Day and Homecoming Dinner

The second and more formal part of the 110th Anniversary celebrations was the 110th Anniversary Dinner themed “Homecoming” held on 16 July 2016 in conjunction with the school’s Speech Day.

Mr Ng Boon Yew, Chairman of the School Advisory Committee kickstarted the 110th Anniversary Speech Day in the morning, with a rousing speech to the school to carry on the flame of Outram Secondary School by pursuing excellence in every thing we do. This year, the school recognised teaching staff on Speech Day by giving out long-service awards and promotional awards in addition to students’ achievements awards. The morning closed with our Valedictorian for the year 2015, Mr Koh Swee Sen’s heartfelt appreciation for the school, the teachers and his thoughts on his journey of learning and success with the school.

At 6pm in the evening, we were honoured to have Dr. Lily Neo, Grassroots Adviser to Jalan Besar GRC (Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng), grace the Homecoming Dinner as our Guest-of-Honour.  She officiated the  opening of the school’s newest building, the Indoor Sports Hall (ISH), recently completed in 2015.

The Homecoming dinner was an excellent platform to bring together more than 500 members of our school family; including the School Advisory Committee, the Old Outramian’s Association, and the Parent-Teacher Association. It also reunited former principals, staff, retired teachers, and the Alumni with our present leaders, staff, students, vendors and other valued school partners. It was indeed a wonderful and tearful reunion as hugs and warm handshakes became a ubiquitous sight everywhere one turned. Excited voices, giggling and chatters filled every inch of the school hall and the electrifying atmosphere promised a night to remember.

As the evening progressed amidst joy and laughter, guests enjoyed various performances by our students and alumni, including exclusive performances by Dr Neo and our Alumnus, Ms Dawn Yip. Guests donated generously through a special auction held as part of the fundraising drive and through the purchase of the school’s 110th Commemorative Book and memorabilia. As the curtain fell on the 110th Celebrations, the photo-taking and well-wishes continued well into the night and everyone left feeling fulfilled, with yet another precious memory and the knowledge that we are a part of one another, joined by a 110-year bond.

Editor’s Note: The 110th Anniversary Main Committee hereby takes the opportunity to extend a huge “Thank You” to everyone who had attended and contributed to the fund-raising events. Your contribution and presence made our homecoming events a tremendous success.
