Science Department Events 2017

On
14 February 2017, the Science Department carried out its annual Science
Activity Day for Secondary 1 students. The department’s vision was to inculcate
a Spirit of Scientific Inquiry and Independence in students and the science
activities allowed students to explore scientific concepts and apply their new
understanding to solve novel problems in life.
The
Science activity that the Secondary One students took part in is the making of
Air Vortex Cannon using recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, tapes and
plastic bags. The students did their work in groups, working together to build
up the Air Vortex Cannon from materials during the time allotted. Apart from
fulfilling the department’s vision of inculcating the spirit of scientific
inquiry, these activities also permitted students to exhibit their teamwork,
perseverance and industriousness as they put in many hours of research to
complete each of their tasks.
The
students came up with various designs for their Air Vortex Cannon, and many of
the groups were able to produce satisfactory results, competing intensely with
the other groups but with a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. In the
end, there were two best performers from Class 1/1 and 1/2 each, and in a final
match-up, the team from class 1/2 managed to come out victorious.
Last
but not least, this Science activity has provided an excellent platform for
better bonding between form teachers, subject teachers and students.
